Lake Mburo National Park (LMNP)

Uganda’s Lake Mburo National Park (LMNP) is a captivating destination for those seeking a wildlife safari experience. Nicknamed the “pocket-sized paradise,” it’s the smallest of Uganda’s savannah national parks, but it packs a punch in terms of biodiversity and beauty.

Located conveniently close to Kampala, the park is a great option for those who are short on time, those that want a more relaxed safari experience, or want to combine a safari with other Ugandan adventures. The park is just a 3.5-hour drive from Kampala, making it easily accessible for a day trip or a longer safari adventure.

Here’s what makes Lake Mburo National Park a special safari destination:
Close to Kampala: Unlike other Ugandan national parks, Lake Mburo is just a few hours drive from Kampala, making it perfect for a weekend getaway.
Birding: With over 350 bird species recorded in the park, Lake Mburo is a paradise for birdwatchers. Look out for the elusive shoebill stork, the colorful lilac-breasted roller, and the impressive martial eagle.
Wildlife viewing: Despite its small size, the park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including Burchell’s Zebra (Equus Burchelli), Rothschild’s Giraffe (Giraffa Camelopardalis Rothschildi), Nile Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus Amphibius), impalas (Aepyceros Melampus), elands, buffalos, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, leopards, hippos, hyenas, topis, and reedbucks. It has until recently been the only place in Uganda to see impalas after which Kampala city is named.
Cultural Experiences: Learn about the Ankole culture by visiting a traditional homestead or attending a cattle milking ceremony.
Activities: There are plenty of activities to enjoy in Lake Mburo National Park, including game drives, bird watching, boat cruises on Lake Mburo, Sport Fishing, horseback riding safaris, nature walks, and cultural tours.
Unique Scenery: The park’s diverse landscape includes lakes, grassy plains, and woodlands, making for some stunning scenery.
Community focus: 20% of the park’s entrance fee is used to fund local community projects, so you can feel good about supporting the park and the people who live around it.
