Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (IATA: NBO, ICAO: HKJK), is the largest and busiest airport in East Africa, it is located in the Embakasi suburbs of Nairobi the capital city of Kenya and is 18 kilometres (11 miles) southeast of the Central Business District. It has flights scheduled to different destinations in more than 50 countries.
Originally named Embakasi Airport, it was changed to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in 1978 to honour the first president and prime minister of Kenya Jomo Kenyatta. The plan to establish the airport was initiated in 1945 after British colonialists had to weigh between rehabilitating the existing Eastleigh Airport or constructing a new airport.
The other three important international airports in Kenya include Kisumu International Airport, Moi International Airport and Eldoret International Airport.
The airport served over 7 million passengers in 20161, making it one of the busiest airports in terms of passenger traffic on the continent.
