The Toro Semliki Wildlife Reserve offers a unique blend of savanna, woodland, and riverine forest habitats, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Established as Uganda’s first gazetted game reserve in 1926, it lies at the northern end of Lake Albert, echoing the diverse ecosystems of Murchison Falls National Park.

Karugutu Community Conservation Association (KCCA)

Karugutu Community Conservation Association (KCCA) is a community-based group dedicated to conservation education through Music, Dance, and Drama (MDD). They organize traditional dances and performances for visitors, providing a rich cultural experience. Additionally, KCCA operates a handicraft shop at the reserve entrance, offering locally made crafts for sale.

Boat Ride on Lake Albert:

Enjoy a boat ride on Lake Albert, where you can spot a variety of bird species including the Shoebill, African Pygmy Goose, Blue-breasted and Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters, and Blue-headed Coucal.

Hike to Nyaburogo Gorge:

This 7km hike is perfect for birders, starting at the Reserve Headquarters and passing through savanna, woodland, and forest habitats. Birds commonly sighted include Arrow-marked Babbler, Tropical Boubou, Black-headed Bushrike, and Luhdrer’s Bushrike. You may also encounter primates such as Black and White Colobus, Baboons, Vervets, and occasionally Chimpanzees.

Wildlife and Habitats

Wildlife Habitats:

The Toro Semliki plain is predominantly grassy savanna and acacia-combretum woodland, with stands of Borassus palms, lakeshore marshland, and broad river valleys filled with gallery forest. Lake Albert, just outside the reserve, is ideal for canoeing and bird watching.

Wildlife:

The reserve hosts key species similar to Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks, including Elephant, Buffalo, Uganda Kob, Waterbuck, Warthog, Giant Forest Hog, and Hippopotamus. Primates include Chimpanzees, Baboons, and Monkeys (Vervet, Red-tailed, and Black and White Colobus). The unique 200-strong Elephant population features savanna, forest, and hybrid forms. Researchers from the University of Indiana studied chimpanzees in the riverine forest at Mugiri near Semliki Safari Lodge.

The reserve boasts 440 bird species, such as the Red-necked Falcon, Black-billed Barbet, and Abyssinian Ground-hornbill. Shoebill is frequently sighted in the marshes of Lake Albert.
